Generally, We think that leathers are of 4 types namely:-
- Full Grain Leather
- Top Grain Leather
- Genuine Leather
- Split Leather
- Bonded Leather
But we are going to break that myth. Leather are generally divided into 3 categories namely:-
- Grain Leather :- These are made from upper part of an animal skin and it’s the most durable part of a skin and divided into number of categories
- Split Leather :- These are made from the bottom part of an animal skin (the fleshy part) and is less durable than Grain Leather.
- Bonded Leather :- These are generally made from the waste of leather . It is usually made from the scrap part of leather. Scrap leathers are crushed into minute particles and are bonded by special chemicals . These type of leathers are the least durable ones.
Most of you will be confused between Genuine Leather and Top Grain Leather. So, Let’s clear that confusion also. Genuine leather is like an umbrella under which all kinds of Leather fall, whether split, grain, top grain, or full grain leather.
Generally Genuine Leather differentiates all kinds of natural leather from Artificial leathers like PU, TPU, Vegan Leather, Leatherette, etc.
Genuine leather doesn’t mean low-quality leather. Full grain leather is also genuine leather, top grain leather is also genuine leather, hunter leather is also genuine leather and all other natural leather comes under genuine leather.

Types of Grain Leather
1)Napa Leather (so called Top Grain or Full Grain Leather)
These are the most common type of leather. It can be both pigmented and non-pigmented leather with bold grain patterns visible on the surface of the leather.
- In Pigmented leather color dyes are used to hide the impurities of the leather and seal the open pores so that water cannot penetrate inside.
- In Non-pigmented Leather less color dyes are used. Here the leather is drum dyed and fewer chemicals are used. The pores are open and water can easily penetrate.
